Where to Take Old Motor Oil, Antifreeze and Car Care Products in Hamilton

The Short Answer

Community Recycling Centres Take Them Free

Hamilton residents can drop off motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, brake and transmission fluid, car batteries, fuel, car wax and car care products at the City's three Community Recycling Centres at no charge. Household hazardous waste is never collected at the curb, and the City says it should never go in the garbage or down a drain or storm sewer.

The Details

How Drop-Off Works

Where

The City lists three centres: Dundas at 27 Olympic Drive, Kenora at 460 Kenora Avenue, and Mountain at 37 Kilbride Road. All three open Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 6 pm, and close on Sundays and holidays.

Who and how much

You must live in Hamilton. Each visit is capped at 40 kg of hazardous waste or 40 litres of liquid. Empty containers are not accepted, so bring the waste in a container you are happy to leave behind.

Car items on the list

The City's accepted list includes antifreeze, automobile batteries, brake fluid, car care products, car wax, fuel, automobile grease, motor oil, oil filters, transmission fluid and driveway salt. Car and engine parts go to the metal area, with all fluids drained first.

Clearing Out the Garage Shelf

Half-used bottles

Old waxes, cleaners and polishes fall under car care products on the City's list, so a shelf of half-empty bottles can go in one trip. Keep them in their original containers.

Spills

To report a spill, the City's line is 905-540-5188 and the province's Spills Action Centre is 1-800-268-6060. Both answer around the clock.

A simpler routine

A coated car is easier to keep clean with a basic wash routine. Our ceramic coating aftercare guide explains what it needs.
